12 Tonne of Ancaster Weatherbed Limestone Arrives at Quarry Farm


Its a great feeling when you hear the sound of the lorry roar up the lane and into the yard with the stone from the quarry. It always feels like a small part of the journey of the sculpture has been achieved. From conception of the idea, to scaling up the dimensions, to visiting the quarry and finding the correct blocks to having them finally delivered seems like it can take a long time, but the hard work is just about to begin!! The largest slab is 4.6 ton with the remaining weighting 3.6 ton (with the small piece on the edge making up the lorries full 12 tonne capacity)

Working on Sculpture B! Once the form is rounded I plan to cut out the two oval windows in the stone. The overall abstracted form is starting to suggest an ancient oil lamp or fragmented vessel with both its jug handles fused together. The stone is very tactile with some interesting surface qualities. You really want to touch the stone when it has so many curves and I envisage this being its appeal once polished.

As Henry Moore once famously said - " The first hole made through a piece of stone is a revelation. The hole connects one side to the other, making it immediately more three-dimensional. A hole can itself have as much shape-meaning as a solid mass". Wet Core drilling and angle grinder's are the tools for the job!

History of a Sculpture

Concepts, designs and editing! Where the ideas begin and the process of linking the history of the site to the function and use of the space with the people who will use it. I was drawn to the woodland in the distance, the sence of habitation for both wildlife and people. The domesticated fragments of pottery (both historically and modern day use) notions of 'nesting' 'dwelling' 'windows', 'trenches', 'family grouping' and a place / space which evokes 'calm, security and play'.  The Monchelsea Place site has had an archaeological dig take place prior to the development of the land for family housing.  The archaeological evaluation undertaken  by Swale & Thames Survey Company (SWAT Archaeology) has been successful in identifying the presence of ditches, pits, postholes and a possible ‘trample layer’ associated with the Iron Age and Roman-British periods.
